Scholarship profile: Laura Chrisinger '13

Home: Weathersfield, Vt.

Major: Psychology

Minors: Dance and religious studies

Activities: I’m involved with the Women’s Center, STAFF (Students Taking Action to Fight Fistula), Blackstone Community, voice lessons, Jazz Band and dance department shows.

What I enjoy most about Connecticut College: The community of caring, active and supportive people I’ve been around since day one. I can positively say that everyone genuinely cares about others and their experience here.

My favorite professor: I’ve been lucky enough to have Adele Myers in the dance department for two classes. One was my freshman seminar. It was called “Movement through Gender and Race” and Adele didn’t beat around the bush about the material we engaged with. Her tenacity pushed us into conversations where we analyzed not just the material for the course, but ourselves as well. I can honestly say Adele pushed me to become the engaged critical thinker and learner that I am now, where I'm continuously questioning systems and ideologies.

The activities I have found most meaningful are: Working with second graders at Winthrop, a local elementary school, was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had at Conn. I worked with them on their reading, played, and mostly just listened.

My proudest achievement so far: I’ve been taking voice lessons since my freshman year – they’re free, thanks to a gift in memory of Jack Niblack ’98 – and that has allowed me to strengthen my singing immensely. I now sing with Chamber Choir and am a singer for the Jazz Band.

My plans after graduation: Before pursuing a graduate degree I’d like to live in some type of sustainable community or join the Peace Corps. After that I’m planning on going on to get my master's or doctorate to become a therapist. Preferably, I'd like to work with children and their families.

The Alumni Board of Directors is proud to show how Annual Fund gifts make a difference in the lives of students and congratulates Laura Chrisinger on her accomplishments.
