Historian Linda Lear '62, Prof. Alex Hybel will speak at Reunion 2012

An acclaimed historian and an award-winning professor known for his global outlook will give key talks during Reunion 2012, June 1-3.

Linda J. Lear '62, known for her definitive biography, "Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature" (1997, 2009) and most recently for "Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature" (2007), will be the speaker at the Sykes Society Lunch on Friday, June 1. Lear also wrote the introduction to the 50th anniversary edition of Carson's "Silent Spring."

Alumnae who have celebrated or are celebrating their 50th reunion are members of the Society; Lear's class will be joining this year. Her topic is "Women Who Made A Difference." More about Linda Lear.

Alex Hybel, the Susan Eckert Lynch '62 Professor of Government, will deliver the keynote address for the weekend, starting at 8 p.m. on Friday. His topic is the Arab Spring, reprising a talk he had with students this fall. The title of his presentation is "Be Careful What You Wish."

Hybel, a native of Argentina, is the author of six books. He has received research and teaching grants from the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, the Pew Foundation, and the Carnegie Foundation. Hybel has led two Study Away/ Teach Away (SATA) programs (to South Africa and Spain) and in 2007-08 was a visiting professor at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Najing, China.
