The third-ranked women's sailing team won second place at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Sperry Top-Sider National Championship this week in Cascade Locks, Ore.

A late rally on the final day of competition took the Camels from fourth to second with a score of 93 points. The University of Rhode Island scored 83 points to win the national championship.

St. Mary's College of Maryland took third place with a score of 95 points. Brown and Yale University rounded out the top five with respective scores of 97 and 99 points.

Atlantic Brugman '13, Elizabeth Wilsterman '12 and Lucy Wallace '13 sailed to a third place finish with a score of 44 points in the A division. In the B division, skipper Maggie Shea '11 and crew Steph Kapinos '13 finished in a sixth place tie with 49 points for the Camels.

"We sailed very well," coach Jeff Bresnahan said. "Brugman, Wilsterman and Wallace had a nice race today and set us up. Our senior leader Maggie Shea and Steph Kapinos beat Yale and St. Mary's to secure the second place finish."

Shea said the competition was a team effort. "It was an awesome experience. Our philosophy was to keep calm and sail on. It was a really strong effort."

Brugman said the conditions were tough, "but we kept our nerves down and maintained our focus."

"Our coach worked very hard to keep us focused on our goal and the competition," she added.
